Includes: Play Money - Coins & Big Five Notes

Teach children how to use money in a safe and fun way with this play money. These coins and big five notes look similar to real South-African money, so your child can realise that real money works the exact same way, while still being distinct enough not to be confused with real money . Using play money develops classification skills, problem-solving, sorting, grouping, visual discrimination, vocabulary, and logical thinking.

Activities with play money:

Sort out the money.

 • Sort the coins and notes according to value: all the R10 notes on one heap, all the R20 notes on another, etc. Tip: Use a sorting tray or play cash register.

Group the money.

 • Let children group the money to get the same amount, e.g., 1xR20 = 2xR10 = 4xR5 = 10xR2 = 20xR1.

Basic calculations

 • Let children do basic math calculations with the money. Instead of writing R5+R5 = R10, the children can use the play money to do the calculation concretely. This makes the calculation more meaningful for the children and lets them see that two R5 coins make a R10 note.

Role-play

 • Playing shop owner and customer is the best way for children to learn how to calculate money and change. Role-playing also develops social skills, language, and creative thinking.

Games

 • Play money can also be used for games like Monopoly, Poker, Boereplaas, etc. In games like these, children learn how to use money responsibly.
