Oil pastels are soft art crayons that can be used to draw on paper, cardboard, and wood. You can use oil pastels only or in mixed media art, e.g., draw over an acrylic painting. One can also use oil pastels to add colour to pencil or charcoal sketches. These oil pastels are brightly coloured and even visible on black paper. Children can use oil pastels to learn various art techniques like colour mixing, blending, and scraping (where you use a sharp object like a knife to scrape off the oil pastels from paper, leaving a smooth coloured surface). Remember: oil pastels can be messy and smudge easily.
