With pipe cleaners (also called chenille stems), your creative possibilities are endless. Pipe cleaners can be bent and shaped to make flowers, animals, people, leaves, bracelets, or whatever you can think of. You can keep the cleaners in the shape they were bent into, or straighten them and use them again to make something else. Children can paste shaped pipe cleaners onto pictures to get a 3D effect or paste straight pipe cleaners around the picture to make a frame. Pipe cleaners can be cut so children have the right lengths for their art projects. One can combine pipe cleaners with other items to make 3D objects, e.g., use cardboard to make an insect’s body and add pipe cleaners as the legs. With construction activities, children can use pipe cleaners instead of rope to tie objects together. Pipe cleaners can also be used as sensory tools and for colour recognition. Working with pipe cleaners develops children’s hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, concentration, colour recognition, and hand muscles.
