The first math a child learns is how to sort objects. By the age of 2, most children can already sort objects according to shape or colour. Sorting is a fun activity for kids that develops their observation skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration and fine motor skills. These 6 round sorting plates are each a different colour to motivate children to sort according to colour. The plates can also be used to sort numbers, shapes or other objects (e.g. separating toy cars from toy animals). By watching how a child sorts objects, an adult can observe how the child is reasoning about the objects. e.g. a child may decide to put all the big cars and big animals on the same plate (sorting according to size) instead of sorting according to type (cars in one and animals in the other plate).
