Touch & Count Cubes (also known as Unifix Cubes) are a versatile mathematics tool that can be used for counting, grouping, measurement, sorting, fractions, patterning, and basic calculations. The cubes can be interlocked together to make rods of different lengths that can be compared.</o:p>

Some examples:</o:p>

1. The cubes can be sorted in two different ways: </o:p>
• Sort the cubes according to colour.</o:p>
• Sort the rods according to length.</o:p>
2. Fractions: </o:p>
• Part-to-whole: Connect cubes to create rods of different lengths (20, 10, 5, 2). Guide children to compare the sticks with each other and realise that 10 is half of 20, 5 is half of 10, and a quarter of 20, etc.</o:p>
• Part-of-Quantity: Do not link the cubes together. Ask children to divide 20 cubes between 5 of them and say what fraction of the cubes each one gets.</o:p>

You can combine Touch & Count cubes with number tiles (A2007A05) to help children move from concrete (physical) to abstract (symbols). Children can easily link and pull apart the cubes on their own. The Unifix cubes can also be treaded together with lace.</o:p>

Using Touch & Count cubes develops logical thinking, problem-solving, colour recognition, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and basic mathematical concepts.</o:p>
