An abacus can be used for teaching basic math skills, like counting, skip-counting, basic calculations, place value, double-digit numbers, and more. For example, with an abacus, children can clearly see that 11 = a set of 10 beads + 1 more bead = 10+1. By moving the beads (concretely), the children develop a better understanding of math than when they merely write (abstract) the calculations. One can also use an abacus to teach about money, e.g., 1 bead = R1. This abacus has 120 beads, that is 12 rows with 10 beads each. With 120 beads this abacus can be used to work with triple-digit numbers, e.g. 118-9=109. Each row is divided into 5 yellow beads and 5 blue beads per row. The latter helps children to do grouping by 5 and 10. Using abacuses develops analytical and logical thinking, numeracy, and fine motor skills.</o:p>
