Base ten sets help children to grasp the relationship between units, tens, hundreds and thousands e.g. 10 units = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred and 10 hundreds = 1 thousand. It is therefore helpful for learning numerical, equivalent and place values, e.g. concretely shows children that 427 is 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 7 units. Base ten sets can also be used for grouping, basic calculations, measurement and fractions. Each unit is 1cm on all sides which provides a visual understanding of length, area and volume.
