Copying patterns teach children fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, one-to-one correspondence, spatial awareness, shape and colour recognition, reading skills, as well as logical and creative thinking. By copying and extending patterns, children learn to make predictions (what comes next) and other skills necessary to do mathematics. Children can copy these pattern cards with Bobbles & Beads (MM-SC-001-B) or by drawing the shapes. Extend your child’s vocabulary and reasoning skills by talking about the patterns and asking questions. For example, “What is this shape or colour called?” and “What piece comes before or after this piece?”. Always ask “why” after a child answers, even when the answer is right. Answering the why question further develops children’s reasoning skills and prevents guessing. It also enables you, as an adult, to know what the child is really thinking.
